BEIJING: US Senator Steve Daines met China’s Vice Premier He Lifeng on Saturday, who sharply criticised Washington’s economic policies while urging dialogue. He, responsible for economic affairs, welcomed Daines, emphasising that the US and China can be “friends” despite trade disputes.
Daines, visiting Beijing to ease tensions from the ongoing trade war, will meet Premier Li Qiang later. He plans to discuss trade issues and the smuggling of fentanyl, a deadly drug linked to China. He reiterated China’s opposition to the politicisation of trade and called for candid, respectful talks with the US. “China and the US share many interests and broad cooperation opportunities,” He stated. Daines, who represents Montana and has extensive experience in China, agreed on the need for constructive dialogue. Trump’s tariffs on key US trade partners, including China, have sparked retaliatory measures from Beijing, with new levies on US agricultural products. Daines voiced concerns over the flow of fentanyl precursors and urged further talks. The US embassy confirmed Daines’ stance on the issue. Beijing has emphasised cooperation on drug control but called for stronger US legislation. Ahead of his visit, Daines also noted the trade imbalance and said President Trump expected a visit by President Xi Jinping, though Beijing has not confirmed the trip. – AFP
