KUCHING: Fifty-seven orphans and children from less fortunate families received donations in the form of ‘duit raya’ and basic daily necessities at Rumah Kanak-Kanak Komplex Kebajikan Laila Taib (Peryatim) yesterday.
The handover ceremony was graced by general manager of Sarawak Economic Development Corporations (SEDC), Abdul Hadi Datuk Abdul Kadir, who represented SEDC chairman, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Husain.
A mock cheque for RM 4,560 was handed to Peryatim deputy chairman, Iskandar Razali, with Abdul Aziz witnessing the handover via Zoom video conference.
Abdul Hadi said SEDC’s annual corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme this year was different due to the conditional movement control order (CMCO) and the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Last year, SEDC invited all children from Komplex Kebajikan Laila Taib to iftar (breaking fast) together and perform ‘Solat Terawikh’. However due to CMCO, we are unable to do that.
“We hope that the situation will be back to normal as soon as possible so that this annual programme can be celebrated together with the orphans once again,” he said in his speech, here at Rumah Kanak-Kanak Komplex Kebajikan Laila Taib yesterday.
Abdul Aziz said the purpose of the charity programme was to provide happiness to underprivileged children.
“The community programme is actually organised every year and involves all SEDC staff, including those working in our subsidiaries.
“The event was very meaningful to SEDC staff as it provided an opportunity for us to give donations,” he said during his speech via Zoom video conference.
Iskandar thanked SEDC Sarawak and its subsidiaries for the donations.
