SIBU: Sempurai Petrus Ngelai stated that the newly appointed Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) councillor lineup presents a balanced combination of experienced senior councillors and energetic younger members.
The reappointed Chairman believes this dynamic mix of perspectives will inject innovative ideas into the SRDC, while simultaneously retaining the wisdom necessary to guide the council’s policymaking.
“As Chairman, I intend to drive forward several key missions and priorities during this new term, foremost among them being the strengthening of community engagement.
“This will involve actively going to the ground to listen to and more effectively address local needs and concerns,” he said.
He made these remarks at the SRDC swearing-in ceremony, officiated by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian at Wisma Sanyan today.
During the ceremony, Sempurai was sworn in again as SRDC Chairman, with Councillor Wong Ching Yong also reappointed as his deputy.
Sempurai further added that enhancing municipal service delivery, particularly in infrastructure, environmental health, and waste management, remains a core mission of the council.
“We also aim to support and align our Council’s vision with the State’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), ensuring our policies and programs contribute to inclusive and sustainable growth.
“Furthermore, we aim to promote honour, integrity and commitment in public service, reminding ourselves that we are here to serve the people with humility and accountability,” he emphasised.
He stressed that this new term is not merely a continuation, but rather a fresh opportunity to elevate the SRDC’s service standards, governance framework, and community development initiatives.
“Let us work hand-in-hand, across political lines and communities, to build a more progressive, inclusive, and dynamic SRDC,” he urged.
“To all councillors present, let us take our oath of office today not as a formality, but as a pledge to serve the people wholeheartedly and with principle.”
