MIRI: The Miri branch of the Sarawak Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Chambers (DUBS) has suggested that Premier Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg consider acquiring Shell’s petrol station network, in a bid to bolster local economic control and empower small businesses.

DUBS Miri chairman, Mohammad Hafidz Rohani revealed the proposal, highlighting the potential benefits of such an acquisition.

He said, with Shell’s recent announcement of selling its stake to Saudi-based conglomerate Aramco for up to RM4.7 billion, local entrepreneurs see an opportunity for Sarawak to secure strategic assets and bolster its business portfolio.

“The acquisition, if pursued, could not only strengthen Sarawak’s economic foothold but also facilitate easier access for small traders to market their products through the station network,” he said yesterday.

Additionally, local ownership would likely provide greater security for gas station operators currently engaged in the business, he added.

“Furthermore, rebranding these stations under the Sarawak brand, potentially as PETROS, could further enhance the region’s identity and economic autonomy,” Hafidz disclosed.

He reiterated that the proposal underscored a proactive approach to economic development and local empowerment, signaling a potential shift towards greater self-reliance and control over critical business assets within the region.
