Drum festival promises unforgettable celebration of Asia’s rich percussive traditions

SIBU: The Sarawak Digital Media E-Platform Association will organise a festival titled Percussive Harmonies: The Asian Beat Fusion at Catholic High School Indoor Basketball Hall on Dec 8.

According to a statement by the association, the festival, which runs from 7pm to 9am, promises an unforgettable celebration of Asia’s rich percussive traditions.

“This brand-new festival celebrates cultural diversity and artistic expression, fostering community engagement through vibrant performances that highlight the region’s rich heritage,” said the statement on Thursday (Nov 28).

The programme, supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, will bring together top-tier performers and dynamic drum troupes from across the region, uniting diverse musical styles and cultures in a harmonious spectacle.

“Audiences will be treated to mesmerising performances by acclaimed groups like FrhythmS from Kuala Lumpur, who will showcase their masterful, synchronised rhythms.

“The KEMADA Group will captivate audiences with Ayun Lundai, blending traditional beats and the soulful sounds of the sape.

“Their performances of Gema Sarawak and Gendang Pampat Batang Rajang will add cultural depth, showcasing Sarawak’s vibrant percussive heritage.”

Local talents from ST Music, such as Darren Ting Shi Eng and Yoiky Lau Zhi Zhi, will bring a contemporary flair with popular hits like ‘Stay’ and ‘Move Like Jagger’.

Performers from Guong Ming Middle School and Chung Hua Middle School No. 3 from Kuching will also showcase their dynamic interpretations of the iconic 24 festive drums.

“Meanwhile, traditional acts by the Newarieh Group will include Gegan Melow, Gegan Telow dan Bermukum, and Gendang Pampat Batang Rajang, adding cultural depth and highlighting Sarawak’s vibrant percussive heritage.

“The grand finale, featuring the captivating Mybeat Drum Circle and the thrilling Infinity Beat performance, promises a powerful crescendo to this rhythmic journey.”
