KUCHING: A female driver was lucky to have escaped with her life after her car crashed and burst into flames along Jalan Kota Sentosa, here last night (June 3).

The accident happened around 9.30 pm in front of a petrol station at Mile 8.

The 19-year-old woman was rescued from the vehicle by members of the public before the fire erupted, and rushed to the hospital for treatment for injuries to her hands and legs.

A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firefighters from Batu Lintang station were dispatched to the scene after receiving a distress call.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the Perodua Kenari ablaze in the middle of the road and they had to use water from a nearby fire hydrant to put out the flames.

The flames were doused at 9.53 pm, and overhaul works followed to ensure there was no risk of reignition.

The cause of the fire and the losses incurred are still under investigation.
