KUCHING: A local man cheated a fiery death after his sports utility vehicle (SUV) went up in flames at Jalan Saradise late last night (Mar 8).

The incident happened at 11.39 pm, but the 38-year-old driver managed to escape unscathed before his vehicle was completely engulfed.

A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firefighters from Tabuan Jaya station were deployed to the scene after receiving a distress call.

Upon arrival, they confirmed the vehicle was beyond saving and extinguished the blaze within 10 minutes using water from the fire truck.

After ensuring the area was safe, the operation wrapped up at 12.05 am.

The cause of the fire and losses incurred is still under investigation.
