Driver injured in collision, 7 passengers escape injuries

SIBU: A man was injured when the van he was driving collided with a sports utility vehicle (SUV) at KM 11 off Jalan Sibu-Selangau, in front of Rumah Seri Kenangan, yesterday (Mar 16).

According to Sibu Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Zone 4 chief Andy Alie, they received an emergency call at 2.21 pm and deployed a team from the Sibu Jaya station to the scene.

“Upon arrival, we came across a person who was injured — the van driver — who was trapped in his seat and suffered a broken right leg, while the seven passengers with him were safe and unharmed.

“Meanwhile, the SUV driver, along with her four passengers, including an eight-month-old baby, did escaped injuries,” he said in a statement today.

Andy said the accident is believed to have occurred when the SUV driver, coming from the direction of the airport, lost control, crashed into the road barrier, and then collided with the van that coming from the opposite direction.

After confirming that everyone was safe, the team ended their operation at 3.30 pm.
