Dress etiquette, a gateway to elegance

Change is most welcome when it leads to positive outcomes and respects the rights and dignity of others. Embracing change, particularly change that promotes equality, justice, and inclusivity, is essential for a better future. However, change that disregards or disrespects others must not be allowed, as it undermines the values that uphold a fair and compassionate society.

The fading dressing etiquette, which is becoming very common these days, even among some of the so-called elites, is a classic example. It is hard not to notice that casual attire seems to be the trend, even at events where dress codes are required.

However, I believe that dressing appropriately is still crucial and relevant, especially when you are specially invited to attend an event. Different events and occasions have different dress codes, which often reflect the traditions, values, and customs associated with a particular group or community.

Recently, I came across a photograph of an esteemed local leader attending an official event in Kuching, wearing jeans and sandals, while the rest of the guests were decently attired. I do not believe the leader in question is so naive as to not notice the glaring differences in attire between himself and the other guests. He was noticeably the odd one out. Or perhaps he just could not care less about his dress given his high status?

I strongly believe that, irrespective of his status, unless he has valid reasons, he should have dressed decently. Otherwise, he is guilty of being disrespectful, particularly to the event’s organizer. Bear in mind that the organizer would have invested considerable effort and resources into planning and executing the event, be it a formal dinner, a business conference, or a cultural gathering.

It is common knowledge that how we dress has a profound impact on our self-perception and confidence. By dressing well and selecting an outfit that aligns with the event’s dress code, we are demonstrating our self-worth and personal pride. This, in turn, enhances not only our self-esteem but also presents us in a polished and respectful manner, giving us the confidence to engage with others more effectively.

When everyone dresses accordingly for the occasion, it indirectly creates a harmonious atmosphere and a shared sense of purpose. It eliminates distractions and ensures that the focus remains on the event itself rather than on individual fashion choices. Furthermore, dress etiquette is not solely about conforming to societal expectations but adapting to the cultural context.

Let us be clear that dress etiquette does not imply we must abandon our style or individuality but rather adapt it to suit the occasion. To a certain extent, it challenges us to think critically about our wardrobe choices and explore innovative ways to express our unique personalities while maintaining the expected level of formality. We can always show our creativity and style but within the boundaries of the dress code. It involves considering the venue, the nature of the event, and the cultural context in which it takes place.

The key lies in using clothing suitable for the occasion while enabling one’s style and preferences to shine through. It can range from a neat, well-fitting business casual outfit for a professional event to tasteful, modest attire for a solemn ceremony.

For instance, if you are attending a formal business conference, a tailored suit or a dress with appropriate accessories would be a fitting choice. On the other hand, for a casual social gathering, smart casual attire that exudes comfort and style would be more suitable.

The key is always to ensure that one’s outfit is clean, well-maintained, and appropriate for the occasion. By investing a little extra effort in selecting an appropriate outfit, we convey a message of respect and consideration for the event’s purpose and the people involved. It shows that we value their time and efforts and are willing to make a conscious effort to participate in a way that aligns with their expectations.

In a nutshell, dressing appropriately for an event is not about wearing a three-piece suit or expensive attire but rather about selecting clothing that is clean, well-maintained, and, most importantly, suits the occasion. 

It is a gesture of respect FOR ourselves and the organizer, demonstrating our understanding of the event’s significance and our commitment to presenting ourselves in a polished and respectful manner. 

Let us embrace dress etiquette as a way to express respect, build connections, and make a lasting impression on ourselves and others.
