SARIKEI: Jalan Hospital, Jalan Pinang Laka, and Jalan Chengal here have been identified as flood-prone areas due to several key issues affecting drainage and water flow.
A recent inspection led by Kapitan Ling Dien Yong, representing Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability cum Sarikei MP Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii, found that poor drainage maintenance, land reclamation, and river obstructions were the main causes of flooding in these areas.
At Jalan Hospital, clogged and poorly maintained drains have led to water stagnation, disrupting residents’ daily activities.
Over at Jalan Pinang Laka, land reclamation work by a developer has obstructed water flow.
In response, the developer has taken immediate action by excavating water pathways to restore proper drainage.
Meanwhile, at Jalan Chengal, the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) has planned a river cleaning initiative as a short-term solution to prevent further flooding.
These measures aim to improve water flow and reduce the risk of recurring floods in the affected areas.
Also present during the inspection were Sarikei District Council chairman Wong Zee Yeng, Sarikei District Council (MDS) engineer Bobari Bilong Nelson Epoi, and DID assistant engineer Mary Rittie.
