KUCHING: Minister of Rural Electricity and Water Supply, Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom was appointed as chairman for next year’s Gawai Dayak Celebration committee.

This was announced by Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas when officiating at the Appreciation Dinner for committee members of 2017 Gawai Dayak Celebration at Telang Usan Hotel here, last Tuesday.

As this year’s turn is that of the Orang Ulu community chaired by Deputy State Legislative Assembly (DUN) speaker, Dato Gerawat Jala, next year is the turn of the Iban community.

“I give 9.5 over 10 points to this year’s committee as they have achieved a very successful celebration despite preparing it in a short period of time.

“With the kick start of Gawai Bazaar organised by this year committee, I hope there will a contination as well as additional set up of Gawai Bazaar in the State,” said Uggah.

During the ceremony, eight chairmen of the sub-committees each received a certificate of appreciation from Uggah.

The handing over of ‘ngiling tikai’ (rolled mat) between Gerawat and Dr Rundi was also held, witnessed by Uggah to symbolise the handing over of duty a chairman.

Also present were Minister of Education, Science and Technological Research, Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong, Assistant Minister of Transportation, Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, Assistant Minister of Water Supply, Liwan Lagang and Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports, Snowdan Lawan.
