MIRI: Deputy Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Well-being Development Datuk Rosey Yunus has urged women’s organisations to support one another in advancing economic and social development.

Speaking at the opening of a handicraft workshop organised by the women’s bureau of Rumah Andrew Abak in Batu Niah, recently, she highlighted the significance of women’s contributions to their communities.

“We are fortunate to have handicrafts for sale,” she said, adding, “do not take lightly the work of women, as it plays a vital role in generating income and supporting families.”

She stressed that handicrafts are in high demand and can significantly ease the financial burden on households.

Rosey also emphasised the value of traditional crafts such as weaving old patterns like pua kumbu.

She encouraged women to innovate by incorporating smaller, modified designs that appeal to buyers as souvenirs.

“For example, using traditional motifs for modern occasions or creating patterns inspired by local heritage, such as the Niah Caves, could be a unique selling point,” she said.
