KUCHING: Sarawak intends to explore the use of ESRI ArcGIS technologies for urban development planning and mapping of natural resources for a sustainable future.
ESRI ArcGIS is a geographic information system (GIS) technology that provides tools to capture, view, edit, manage, analyse, and share data in the context of location.
This was expressed by Deputy Premier and Second Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan at an ArcGIS Technologies session with ESRI Malaysia here yesterday (Sept 22).
Esri Malaysia CEO Tan Choon Sang recapped the previous engagement at ESRI User Conference San Diego USA in which nine areas of interest were identified namely Land Use, Mineral and Natural Resources, Change Detection, Water Supply, Gas Supply, Smart City, Conservation Program, Wildlife Mapping and Talent Development.
ESRI Malaysia industry consultant team manager Firdaus Asri shared some case studies on New Mexico using GIS to ensure mining operates responsibly and efficiently, and also Singapore under the Smart Cities area.
“Datuk Amar Awang Tengah proposed to ESRI Malaysia along with SAINS to carry out a comprehensive study on GIS solutions for natural resources of Sarawak such as mapping of mineral types, crocodile density areas and so on.”
Also present were Deputy Minister for Urban Development, Land Administration and Environment, Datuk Len Talif Salleh; advisor to the Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment, Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais; director of Land and Survey, Datuk Abdullah Julaihi; general manager of Sarawak Multimedia Authority, Dr Zaidi Razak, and SAINS CEO Dr Anderson Tiong.
