SIBU: The Diabetes Malaysia Sibu District Branch (DMSDB) has kicked off its Diabetes Awareness Campaign for 2025, continuing its commitment to raising awareness about diabetes prevention, management, and early detection within the community.

This year’s campaign is part of a larger, statewide Initiative spearheaded by the Diabetes Malaysia Sarawak Branch.

The comprehensive programme launched simultaneously in Kuching, Sri Aman, Sibu, Bintulu, and Miri was officiated virtually via Zoom by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also the Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister, on Sunday.

DMSB, in a statement, said the year-long campaign commenced with an impactful event held at Farley Stage at Salim Road, featuring free health screenings, offering the community a vital opportunity to monitor their health.

It also included an engaging diabetes exhibition, designed to educate participants on the risks, prevention strategies, and management of diabetes as well as one-on-one diabetes counselling where attendees can receive expert advice and support.

Members of DMSDB collaborated closely with medical students and doctors from SEGi University’s Faculty of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Science, as well as healthcare professionals from the Sibu Divisional Health Office.

“This collaborative effort reflects the campaign’s mission to unite the community in the fight against diabetes.

“Our main objectives of the campaign are to underscore the critical importance of early detection through regular health screenings, and to provide the community with comprehensive education on preventing and managing diabetes effectively,” the statement added.

Mreanwhile, a representative from DMSDB highlighted that diabetes is a growing concern, and through awareness, education, and early action, can reduce its impact on individuals and families.

“We are thrilled to work with various partners and health professionals to support the Sibu community in leading healthier lives.

“The Diabetes Awareness Campaign stands as a testament to DMSDB’s ongoing dedication to fostering a healthier and more informed community,” he asserted.

Among those present were DMSDB chairman, Tiong Kiong King, Sibu Divisional Health officer, Dr Teh Jo Hun and SEGi University’s Faculty of Medicine dean, Prof Dr Mohamad Raili Suhaili.
