KUCHING: A young man’s unwavering devotion to his bedridden mother has highlighted the daily struggles of family caregivers, as local non-governmental organisation (NGO) Hope Place Kuching steps in to offer much needed support.

For 34-year-old Kevin, caring for his mother, Ngu Tek Ngik, 68, is a full-time commitment as she has been bedridden for years after a stroke, with minimal mobility and the ability to move only her arms to feed herself.

Each time Kevin lifts her to clean or change her diapers, she cries out in pain, raising concerns about a possible undiagnosed spinal condition.

A technician at a bowling centre, Kevin has reduced his working hours to be by his mother’s side, ensuring she is well-fed and comfortable while also providing quiet companionship.

Despite their challenges, he remains steadfast in his duty, relying on limited assistance from family members and welfare aid.

Recognising their hardship, Hope Place Kuching, also known as Persatuan Kebajikan Harapan Kuching, has stepped in to provide adult diapers.

Ngu also receives RM500 in social welfare assistance, while her brother and Kevin’s cousin offer occasional support, bringing home cooked meals and visiting them.

As part of a community outreach initiative, Hope Place enlisted students from St Joseph International School to help clean Ngu’s home.

Nine Year 12 students and their teacher spent the day clearing rubbish and removing three broken washing machines, an act that Hope Place commended while encouraging other schools to participate in similar efforts.

Hope Place welcomes public support to continue its work.

Those interested in contributing can contact the NGO at 082 505987 or 013 5672775.

Donations are accepted via Maybank (MBB 511289001160), with receipts available upon request.

More details can be found on their Facebook page, which also provides a Sarawak Pay or S PAY GLOBAL QR code for digital contributions.
