Deputy minister stresses importance of unified action for environmental protection

SIBU: Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration, and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh praised the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) for organising the Stakeholder Engagement programme.

He said that through workshops, consultations, and sustainable initiatives, along with the invaluable contributions of all stakeholders, the stakeholders can build a strong foundation for environmental stewardship.

“Today’s engagement is a significant step towards a sustainable future, and our collective efforts will drive continued progress,” he said in his speech at the programme’s closing ceremony at a leading hotel here yesterday (Sept 5).

The Kuala Rajang assemblyman said that unlike other areas where efforts can be ad hoc and piecemeal, environmental protection requires consistent and unified action.

“The government, the private sector, and communities must work together to safeguard the environment for future generations.

“Through strategic partnerships and a dedicated workforce, we are not just imagining a sustainable future; we are actively building it,” he said.

He also commended NREB’s three decades of dedication to protecting the environment and promoting the sustainable use of natural resources in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“Your commitment to advance environmental initiatives in Sarawak is truly commendable. I am confident that this collaborative engagement will have a lasting positive impact on our journey towards sustainability.

“Strive for excellence, set a benchmark for environmental responsibility, and achieve a harmonious balance between progress and preservation,” he said.

Meanwhile, Controller of Environmental Quality Sarawak Jack Liam said a total of 350 participants, including project proponents, project developers, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Consultants, Environmental Auditors, and officers from relevant government agencies, participated in the programme.

Themed ‘Empowering Stakeholders Towards Environmental Sustainability in Sarawak’, nine papers were presented by officers from NREB, covering a wide range of topics, including EIA, Environmental Management Plan (EMP), enforcement and compliance, post-EIA monitoring, environmental auditing, water quality monitoring, used tyre management, and the EIA Consultants Management System (EIACMS).
