KUCHING: The late Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud played a pivotal role in transforming the fishing village in Demak Laut into an industrial area.

Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni attributed this to his service and devotion to developing the area.

“One of the greatest contributions by Taib included the establishment of Senari Port which became the largest international port here (Demak Laut).

“Initiated in 1981 and completed in 1990, the port has gained recognition from foreign countries such as Germany,” he said during the Sarawak Kita Empun (SKE) 2.0 event held at Wisma Sabati here on today (Feb 25).

Dr Hazland said Taib also contributed to creating a scientific and industrial corridor in Jana Kuasa Sejingkat.

“His efforts to add industrial zones to Samarahan as well as Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) as a scientific and industrial corridor can definitely bring high income to Sarawak,” he said.
