SIBU: A decomposed body of an unidentified man was discovered floating in the Rajang River here this afternoon.
The discovery was made after a six-second video showing a corpse drifting in the river went viral on Facebook, shared by a user under the name “Sarawakian”.
Following the viral clip, a team from the Sibu Marine Police conducted a search and subsequently found the body at around 1.30 pm.
Sibu District Police chief, ACP Zulkipli Suhaili, said the deceased was a bald male, estimated to be about five feet tall, and was found floating face down without any clothing.
“Initial checks found no visible injuries, signs of struggle or foul play on the body.
“A red thread necklace was found around the victim’s neck,” he said in a statement today.
The identity, age and ethnicity of the deceased have yet to be confirmed.
The body has since been sent to the Forensic Unit of Sibu Hospital for a post-mortem to determine the cause of death.
The case is currently classified as sudden death (SDR).
Police are urging members of the public with missing family members or relevant information to come forward and assist in the investigation.
