KUCHING: A total of 283 road accidents were recorded across the state from Jan 28 to Feb 2 during Ops Selamat 23, said Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata.
He said the operation was conducted in conjunction with the 2025 Chinese New Year celebrations. The figure represents a decrease from 342 cases recorded during Ops Selamat 21 in 2024, marking a reduction of 59 cases.
“For fatal accidents, three were recorded during Ops Selamat 23 in 2025, compared to seven cases in Op Selamat 21 in 2024. This marks a decrease of four cases,” he said in a statement yesterday (Feb 3).
The fatal accidents involved one motorcyclist, one lorry driver, and one passenger in a four-wheel drive.
“Among the causes of road accidents were negligence and carelessness on the part of drivers who failed to properly control their vehicles. These human factors included reckless behaviours such as exceeding speed limits, veering off the road, head-on collisions, and rear-end crashes,” he added.
He also said that Sarawak police issued a total of 3,804 summonses to road users for various traffic offenses during Ops Selamat 23 in 2025.
“Police advise all road users to always comply with traffic regulations and follow instructions from enforcement officers on duty, especially during festive seasons. Additionally, all road users are urged to prioritise their safety and the safety of their loved ones while on the road,” he added.
