KUCHING: The decision to let Ramadan bazaars operate or not this year at the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) area will be finalised soon.
Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Islamic Affairs & DBKU) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said Sarawak has yet to make a decision on the matter even though the federal government has already allowed it.
“We had a brief discussion on this matter (the operations of Ramadan bazaars), but the final decision will be announced after getting a full report from the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC),” he said at a press conference after visiting the enhanced movement control order (EMCO) Operations Centre and handing over food aid to Kampung Bintawa Ulu and Kampung Bintawa Tengah here on Sunday (Mar 21).
He added that DBKU plans to open three Ramadan bazaars, namely in Kubah Ria, Sukma Ria and Semarak.
“There are also applications to open Ramadan bazaars in several other locations, including in Bandar Baru Samariang and Demak Laut,” he said.
He advised traders to abide by the standard operating procedures (SOPs) if the Ramadan bazaars were to be allowed to operate.
On March 19, SDMC chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the committee will discuss the matter the following week.
“The federal government has prepared the SOPs, and SDMC will discuss (on this) next week,” he said at a press conference.
