KUCHING: The Federal Court has commuted the death sentence on four prisoners to life imprisonment after allowing their review applications today (May14).

Federal Court Judges Datuk Rhodzariah Bujang, Datuk Hanipah Farikullah and Datuk Nordin Hassan who sat in Kuching heard the review applications of the four prisoners and allowed their respective applications under the Revision of Sentence of Death and Imprisonment for Natural Life (Temporary Jurisdiction of the Federal Court) Act 2023 and the Abolition of the Mandatory Death Penalty Act 2023.

Three of the death-row prisoners were convicted for murder and one prisoner convicted for drug trafficking.

The three death row inmates convicted for murder are Asis Lako, 41; Daud Passarin, 40; and Daniel Usin, 34. Their death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment of 35 years with 12 strokes of whipping; 34 years with 12 strokes of whipping; and 33 years with 12 strokes of whipping respectively.

Meanwhile, Ramasamy Mahendran, 51, who was convicted for drug trafficking, had his death sentence commuted to 30 years with no whipping imposed.

The Federal Court ordered all of them to begin their sentences from the respective dates of their arrests.

The four prisoners were represented by Counsel Simon Siah, Jong Yee Ling, Russell Lim, Eirene Chan, Moh Ung Kieng, and Brendan Ting.
