KUCHING: A gathering of nearly 100 riders dressed in their elegant dapper gear and atop their classic and vintage motorcycles will be taking to the city’s main roads for the annual Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride (DGR) today (May 21).

The event, organised by Rogue Squadron Motorcycle Crew (RSMC), is part of the global movement with over 93,000 riders from more than 100 countries participating this year.

The primary aim is to raise awareness about men’s mental health and prostate cancer research.

Riders will embark on their journey through the city area, commencing at 11 am.

In welcoming all to join the event particularly motorcycle enthusiasts, RSMC advisor Ian Dominic said the bikers will gather at the Kuching South City Council (MKBS) compound at 10.30 am and followed by the flagging off at 11 am.

“Apart from classical designed motorcycles, we welcome those with motorcycles of modern types, choppers, underbone (kapchai), scooters, trackers and scramblers to join the ride.

“However, for safety reasons, racing motorcycles are not permitted to join the ride. Nevertheless, they are encouraged to support the event and its noble cause,” he said in a press conference on Friday evening.

Meanwhile, RSMC president Mike Chin said DGR is a global initiative with an objective to promote awareness of men’s mental health, specifically focusing on prostate cancer and suicide prevention.

“The event also serves as a fundraiser and awareness campaign for Movember, a leading charity dedicated to men’s health,” he said.

In addition to Kuching, DGR will also be held in several other cities, including Sibu, Bintulu, Johor Bahru, Kuala Lumpur, Melaka, Penang, and Kota Kinabalu.

Founded in 2012 by Mark Hawwa in Sydney, Australia, the inaugural DGR event saw 3,000 riders.

Last year, the ride attracted about 94,000 participants from 101 countries, raising a fund of $6,040,000.

Among the sponsors for the DGR in Kuching are Tian Hee Food Court and Bazz Club.
