KUCHING: Constant theft of metal covers for drains and manholes throughout the city is posing serious danger to pedestrians and motorists.

Despite warnings from police, these unscrupulous thieves are not stopping their act because there are buyers of such scrap metal.

Padawan Municipal Councilor Tnay Li Ping suspected that the metal thieves are drug addicts who are willing to sell the metal for a few ringgit to get a fix. She opined that scrap metal factory owners could put an end to these crimes by refusing to buy suspected stolen items.

Yesterday morning, Tnay checked out on a missing metal cover at Golden Arch here which was right in the centre of the road. She said a member of the public had alerted her that a car almost reversed into the hole which was covered with wood by concerned hawkers there.

To prevent other vehicles from running into the hole, someone put a long pole there to alert road users.
