KUCHING: A political observer said the country should focus on the economy and avoid political controversies.
Datuk Peter Minos said fellow Malaysians are sick of the never-ending political squabbles and hoped the federal government would focus on the economy and steer away from political controversies.
“Negative politicking adversely affects the mood of Malaysians and shifts the focus on economic issues and matters.
“After the Covid-19 pandemic, Malaysians want to see economic recovery intensified. Those who lost wholly or partly their businesses and incomes due to the two-year pandemic want the government to help them pick up the pieces and rise up again,” he said.
As for the low-income groups and the poor, Minos said they are desperately trying to improve their financial and economic lives and look to the government to give them a helping hand.
He said the business community and entrepreneurs who were affected by the pandemic sought the government’s help for fiscal investments and incentives for a vigorous growth and expansion of their business.
“But if instability and uncertainty is set because of political squabbles among the leaders and top politicians, the mood for economic recovery and economic development as a whole is affected,” he said.
Minos, who is the Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) chairman, felt that former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s legal action against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for defamation, and former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s past actions are disrupting the country’s economic recovery.
“It is now a political war between the present prime minister and two former prime ministers. This has serious implications and this is very worrying. Ordinary Malaysians are concerned and worried.
“For Malaysians, it must be the economy first and politics later, for our economy badly needs mending and recovery after the pandemic and many years of political upheaval.
“Thankfully here in Sarawak, we are spared of what ails in West Malaysia. We are truly blessed and thankful to our Sarawakian leaders for having wisdom, and are fair and reasonable in what they say and do,” he said.
