MIRI: The Sarawak Customs Department (JKDM) has foiled an attempt to smuggle dangerous drugs worth an estimated RM259,840.
The operation, conducted on Thursday (Dec 5), exposed the suspect’s cunning tactic of using a vacant business premise to evade detection.
According to Sarawak JKDM director Norizan Yahya in a statement today (Dec 15), acting on intelligence from the Sarawak JKDM Narcotics Branch, officers from the Miri Station Narcotics Unit, with support from the Miri Station Ground Operations Unit, apprehended a local man at about 10.30 am.
The suspect was arrested after retrieving a courier box from a delivery service employee outside an unoccupied business premise at Center Point 2, Jalan Kubu, Miri.
A thorough inspection of the courier box revealed 9,280 Erimin 5 pills, weighing 2,604 grams, concealed within four containers of oat-based food products and two cans of brown sugar.
These substances, suspected to be Nimetazepam, were seized under Section 30(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect utilised courier services from Kuala Lumpur and deliberately addressed the parcel to an empty business premise to avoid arousing suspicion.
The suspect was presented before the Miri Magistrate’s Court on Dec 6 for a remand application.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the potential penalty of death or life imprisonment.
