KUCHING: Customs officers thwarted an attempt to smuggle a large quantity of cannabis worth approximately RM158,340, reaffirming their commitment to effective and high-integrity enforcement.
According to Sarawak Customs director Norizan Yahya, the operation took place on Jan 22, at around 11.15 am, when a team from the Narcotics branch, in collaboration with the Land Operations Unit of the Customs Sarawak Enforcement Division, intercepted a suspect collecting a courier parcel from a delivery company located at Jalan Lee Ling, here.
Upon inspecting the package, officers discovered 25 packets of cannabis concealed within Dairy Milk chocolate wrappers.
The total weight of the seized drugs was 5,280 grammes, with an estimated street value of RM158,340.
Investigations suggest that traffickers attempted to smuggle the narcotics from Malaya to Sarawak via air courier, falsely declaring the shipment as “merchandise” in an effort to evade detection.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment with no fewer than 15 strokes of the cane upon conviction.
