BINTULU: The Customs Department foiled an attempt to smuggle over 3kg of cannabis worth nearly RM98,000 into Sarawak via courier during an inspection at the Bintulu Post Office.
Sarawak Customs Department director Norizan Yahya said the drugs, suspected to have originated from Pasir Mas, Kelantan, were found during an inspection at around 9.05 am on Mar 24.
“A thorough inspection of the package led to the discovery of 30 compressed packets suspected to contain cannabis.
“The total weight of the seized drugs is estimated at 3,260.47 grams, with an approximate street value of RM97,814.10,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides for the death penalty or life imprisonment upon conviction.
If sentenced to life imprisonment, whipping of not less than 15 strokes is also mandatory.
Norizan stressed that cannabis is listed as a dangerous drug under Part I of the First Schedule of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
He urged the public to support enforcement efforts by providing information on smuggling activities involving drugs, cigarettes, alcohol, firecrackers, vehicles, and other prohibited items.
He assured that all informants’ identities will be kept confidential. Reports can be made via the Customs Toll-Free Line at 1-800-88-8855 or by contacting the nearest Customs office.
