NEW industries will be created and current ones can evolve, should the proposed Forest Amendment Bill 2022 be passed, Simon Sinang Bada (GPS-Tebedu) believes.
“The introduction of this Bill is timely as it was tabled with the intention to, firstly, make carbon stock as one of our forest products and, secondly, to create amenity forest and permanent forests.
“Thirdly, to give the power to the government to approve all activities related to carbon stock and trading and lastly, to introduce Forest Carbon Licence,” he said during debate time at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on Thursday (May 19).
He pointed out that while other developed countries were producing carbon dioxide, “our country is producing the oxygen for the rest of the world.”
“The world has started to see the importance of carbon stock, carbon credit and carbon trading and to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas, 187 countries around the world, including our country, signed the Paris Agreement to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide and Kyoto Protocol 1997 to have a clean development mechanism and international emission trading was formulated where countries with extra carbon credit are allowed to sell the carbon credit.
“My hope is that our country, Malaysia and Sarawak in particular, will continue to have extra carbon credit so that our future generation will continue to reap the benefits of this newfound wealth that has not been tapped into in the past.”
