KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court has set Apr 24 for the re-mention of a local man’s case in connection with the murder of Nurul Asikin Lan, fondly known as Amoy, in December last year.
Magistrate Sharifah Fatimah Azura Wan Alwi fixed the date after deputy public prosecutor Jean Siow Chung Hwei requested a postponement.
The prosecution requested a new date pending a post-mortem deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) report on Nurul Asikin, 28 – which is still not available.
Nurul Asikin’s decomposed body was found in a drain along Jalan Setia Raja, Tabuan Jaya, on Dec 15 last year.
During today’s proceedings, four of the victim’s family members were present to hear the accused’s case.
Previously, Zakwan Mokhtar, 23, only nodded in understanding as the charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code was read to him.
According to the charge sheet, he is accused of murdering Nurul Asikin in a drain along Jalan Setia Raja, Tabuan Jaya, at around 9.10 pm on Dec 14.
No plea was recorded, as murder cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
Hence, the court ordered the accused to remain in remand until the next mention date.
Separately, Zakwan was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment by the Magistrate’s Court under Section 182 of the Penal Code for filing a false police report regarding Nurul Asikin’s disappearance.
