BAU: The General Operations Force (GOF) arrested a couple and rescued 53 birds of various species from their home at Jalan Bau-Batu Kawa-Selalang on Sunday morning (June 28).
Sarawak GOF Brigade commander Mancha Ata said the couple was arrested during an operation codenamed ‘Ops Bersepadu Khazanah’ (OBK) around 10.30am.
Acting on information received, a special OBK task force along with Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) raided a house belonging to a 54-year-old man and 49-year-old woman.
“A total of 53 birds of various species — 34 parakeets, 10 parrots, six white-rumped shama and three barbets — along with 27 empty bird cages and a bird trap were found in the front yard of the house.
“The couple failed to produce any valid document or permit to own the wildlife in their possession,” said Mancha in a statement.
He added that the birds and cages were worth RM7,000. The couple and the birds were handed over to SFC Kuching branch for further investigation and action under Section 29 of the Sarawak Wildlife Protection Ordinance 1998.
