KUCHING: Members of the public are welcome to the New Year Countdown 2019 celebration and launching of the Visit Sarawak Campaign this Dec 31 at the Kuching Waterfront.
Starting from as early as 5pm, the event organised by the state government will feature a variety of activities such as fireworks display, musical water fountain and stage performances by national and local artistes.
“There will also be a water show, lighting up of the Darul Hana Bridge, 3D imaging and a video show from the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) culminating with the fireworks display at the stroke of the midnight,” said Tourism, Art, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah at a press conference at UTC Kuching here yesterday.
According to him, four big LED screens will also be erected strategically around the venue for the convenience of the public.
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg is expected to officiate at the celebration at 10.30pm.
Abang Johari’s wife Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang and other state ministers will also be attending, including those from the tourism and airline industries.
“At the event, we will also launch the Visit Sarawak Campaign with the tagline “More to Discover” which is set to run next year. The campaign already had its series of soft launches in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Germany, London and China – serving as a teaser for the trade and tourism industry players.
“The Visit Sarawak Campaign will offer a more meaningful and quality time for tourists to stay in the state, and we are targeting to hit five million tourists to visit the state next year,” he stressed.
According to the minister, another great milestone achieved under the campaign platform is the collaboration between STB and Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA), where Sarawak will be connected directly between Bandar Seri Begawan and Kuching with two flights per week, starting this Dec 28, and it will be increased to four flights a week by Feb 3 next year.
