KUCHING: Police are in the midst of tracking down 26 individuals suspected of carrying out e-commerce scams on online platforms.
Kuching OCPD ACP Ahsmon Bajah said a special team had been activated to bring the suspects to book.
He explained that these scams were run on online platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, MiChat, WeChat, Mudah.com, Carousell, Lazada and Shopee, among others.
“All the identified suspects are locals. So far, no arrests have been made.
“They are not in Kuching or Sarawak but are believed to be residing outside of the state or abroad. Despite this, we will still try to hunt them down,” he told the media at the Kuching District Police Headquarters (IPD) here on Thursday (Aug 12).
ACP Ahsmon said the modus operandi revolved around offering special prices for expensive items such as mobile phones, computers, branded goods and jewellery.
“We can see a lot of ads on Facebook that offer attractive price offers, such as a discount of up to 70 per cent for a gold chain.
“Meanwhile on Shopee, the suspects would initially offer good deals to gain Shopee and customer confidence. Only afterwards will they commence their fraudulent activities.”
ACP Ahsmon called on the public with information regarding the suspects to step forward and contact the CCID Scam Response Centre at 03-26101559.
He assured that the identities of the informants would be kept confidential.
