SIBU: A 48-second video clip claiming that a shooting incident occurred at a local eatery here, has been debunked by police as fake.
The footage, depicting four armed men firing multiple shots at a man seated among others at a table, had gone viral on social media today (Dec 31).
The video, detected circulating on social media at around 10am this morning, caused alarm among the public.
Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili confirmed that the alleged incident did not occur in the district.
He stated that the actual incident took place abroad and it happened two years ago.
“Police are taking this matter seriously as it causes unnecessary fear and anxiety among the community.
“We will not hesitate to act against any irresponsible individuals under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a fine of up to RM50,000 or a jail term of up to one year, upon conviction,” he said in a statement.
In this regard, Zulkipli advised the public to refrain from sharing the video clip and making any speculative comments.
Members of the public are advised to be more responsible and do not spread any fake news.
Further checks revealed that the shooting occurred in Brazil on Dec 16, 2022. The 34-year-old victim was shot 15 times by the perpetrators inside a snack bar at Avenida Mato Grosso, Apucarana.
