MIRI: A40-something woman, working as a company director, has lost RM78,823 to an online job scam in her attempt to earn extra income.
Miri police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the victim was promised a commission of 10 to 20 per cent for each task assigned.
“She was instructed to book hotel rooms and make several fund transfers but never received the promised commission,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a prison sentence of one to ten years, along with whipping and a fine upon conviction.
Alexson urged the public to be cautious of online job offers that appear too good to be true, particularly those that claim to offer easy and lucrative earnings.
“Always verify the company’s name and registration number before accepting any job offer, and never make payments to unknown parties.
“The public is also reminded to stay calm and avoid engaging with calls from unknown individuals,” he added.
He advised anyone who has fallen victim to cyber fraud and recently transferred funds to a suspect’s bank account or e-wallet to contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) via the 997 hotline.
