KUCHING: A search and rescue (SAR) operation has been launched to locate a foreign crewman who allegedly fell into Batang Salak waters from a barge today (Mar 15).

The 19-year-old victim has been identified as Win Myat Thu, who is a Myanmar national.

A spokesman from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said they received a call from Santubong police about the incident around 1.23 pm.

Firemen from Petra Jaya station were promptly dispatched to the scene, about 20km from the station.

Rescuers have set up a SAR control post at the Sarawak Marine Fisheries Department wharf in Santubong.

As of press time, the search is ongoing and the victim is yet to be found.
