KUCHING: Sarawak’s coastal road network has achieved 77.9 per cent progress, accounting for significant advancements in its RM5.42 billion development plan.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said this comprehensive initiative includes 13 new road and bridge packages and 29 rehabilitation works, with completion timelines stretching from 2024 to 2027.
“To date, all the new road and bridge packages are under construction with one package expected to be completed this year.
“Following that, ten packages to be completed in 2025, one package to be completed in 2026 and one final package to be completed in 2027,” he said during the Public Works Department (PWD) Gala Night at Imperial Hotel on Monday night (Dec 9).
Uggah who is Infrastructure and Port Development Minister added that the RM5.58 billion second trunk road project is on track.
Consisting of 20 work packages, he said 15 projects are in various stages of construction, and the remaining five are at a pre-contract stage.
“The construction schedule for the 15 projects encompasses three projects that are targeted for completion in 2025.
“This followed by seven packages to be completed in 2026, two packages to be completed in 2027, and three packages to be completed in 2028,” he said.
As such, he assured that both the second trunk road and coastal road network will be completed by 2028.
Additionally, Uggah noted that Sarawak PWD is managing 496 projects under the 12th Malaysia Plan (MP), valued at RM30 billion.
He asserted that 203 have been completed, 109 under construction and 184 at pre-contract stage.
Meanwhile, the department oversees 276 regional development agency projects worth RM3.48 billion and 146 federal projects valued at RM2.26 billion.
“It is critical that PWD must prove it has the capacity to implement these projects efficiently.
“Our capacity is for projects below RM50 million. It will then enable Sarawak to request for the ceiling of this programme to be increased to RM100 million or even more.
“The Sarawak government’s objective is to have all federal project infrastructure of this ceiling implemented by Sarawak PWD,” he said.
