MIRI: The Coastal Erosion Control Project in Kampung Batu 1 Kuala Baram is expected to be completed by the end of October.
Minister for Transport, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the project has now reached a progress level of 95 per cent.
“The project is now 95 per cent complete, but upon inspection, there are still a few challenges, namely the access routes for the fishermen’s boats have been blocked by the accumulation of organic marine material.
“The pile of marine life is carried by the tide and brought back by the recurring waves along Pantai Batu Satu, Kuala Baram. This situation is not new and it inconveniences the fishermen from going in and out to sea to earn a living,” Lee was quoted as saying in a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report during his working visit recently.
Lee, who is also the Senadin assemblyman, said he had directed the contractors involved to be prepared to clean up the marine material washed up there.
“I also requested the Sarawak Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID) along with the contractor involved and the consultant to find a solution to this problem, either in terms of modifying the design of their plan,” he added.
The project is implemented by Sarawak DID under the 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP).
It includes the construction of erosion control structures such as stone walls, wave breakers geotubes and coastal reclamation structure methods.
Lee hoped that Sarawak DID will monitor the progress of the implementation of the project to ensure it can be fully completed before the monsoon season, which usually occurs at the end of the year.
