MIRI: Minister of Transport Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration at SJKC Chung Hua Tudan reflected the harmony of the multi-ethnic society in Sarawak.

He added the celebration also highlighted the unique Chinese culture in the state.

Lee said this in his speech at the CNY celebration and Ang Pow presentation ceremony at SJKC Chung Hua Tudan yesterday (January 9).

“Celebrations like this are the best platform to foster cultural understanding and build strong bonds among Sarawak’s multi-ethnic communities.

“More than 70 per cent of the students at SJKC Chung Hua Tudan comprise indigenous Bumiputera while the remaining 30 per cent are Chinese.

“Therefore, such events can introduce the cultural heritage of the Chinese community to students of various ethnicities, fostering a spirit of respect for diversity,” he said.

Lee, who is also the Senadin assemblyman, added that Sarawakians were fortunate to live in harmony in the state where celebrations such as CNY, Hari Raya, Gawai Dayak, and Christmas were celebrated together regardless of race or religion.

He also expressed gratitude to the teachers for their dedication to education, particularly in teaching the Chinese language to the majority of students from non-Chinese backgrounds.

Lee then took the opportunity to distribute ‘ang pow’ (red packets containing cash) to the students as a symbol of blessing and prosperity for the upcoming new year.

Also present were the headmaster of SJKC Chung Hua Tudan Law Sie Kong and other distinguished guests.
