MIRI: In celebration of Miri’s 20th anniversary as a city, the Miri City Council (MCC) is inviting residents to participate in the ‘Beautiful Garden Contest 2025’, an initiative aimed at fostering community involvement in beautifying and maintaining home gardens.

Organised by the council’s Landscape Section, the competition is open to participants from Miri and Bario, with free registration starting today.

The council said in its statement that the competition encourages creativity in landscape design while promoting environmental sustainability.

“Participants will be judged based on the aesthetic appeal, cleanliness, and innovative use of green practices in their gardens.

“The contest is divided into several categories, including Primary Schools, Secondary Schools, Government Agencies, Hotels and Resorts, and Homestays (Bario only).

“Entries will be assessed in two main aspects – outdoor landscaping (60 per cent) and indoor greenery (40 per cent). The criteria include plant diversity, structural landscape elements, maintenance, creativity, and adherence to the 5R principles (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle),” it said.

“Registration forms can be obtained at MBM’s Landscape Section (Level 4) or Public Relations Section (Level 5), or downloaded from the council’s official website.

“The first round of judging will be based on submitted photographs, after which the top five participants will advance to the second round involving on-site evaluations” it said.

Interested participants must submit their completed forms along with photographs of their gardens in either hardcopy or digital format by May 2.

For more details, the public may contact the council’s Landscape Section at 085-414 682.

With this initiative, the council hopes to inspire residents to create beautiful and sustainable gardens, enhancing Miri’s reputation as a green and vibrant city.
