Christmas parade makes spectacular return

SIBU: The Christmas parade made a spectacular return with thousands of people from various denominations and groups converging at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 1 on yesterday (Dec 10).

Aided by fine weather, the annual event which is making a comeback after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, lit up the festive mood of the Swan city.

The Christmas procession which was organised by the Association of Churches in Sarawak (ACS) Sibu branch with ‘A Saviour has been Born’ as its theme started at 6 pm.

The welcoming speech was delivered by the Chairman of the ACS Sibu branch Rev Jonathan Lau Puong Fuang.

“I am thankful and full of joy as this year, we can gather physically at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang to attend the Sibu Christmas Procession 2022, organised by ACS Sibu branch with BEM (Borneo Evangelical Mission) as the hosting church,” he said.

The event was followed by Sibu District Superintendent of BEM, Pastor Yahya Ating, delivering the Christmas message while Bishop of Sarawak Chinese Annual Conference (SCAC) Bishop Dr Lau Hui Ming read out the benediction.

The Christmas procession started at 7.17 pm after the symbolic lighting up ceremony by church leaders from different denominations, prior to the highlight of the evening, the Christmas procession.

As the night wore on, the streets came to life with musical performances, multicoloured floats, costume displays and the giving of sweets.

The procession started from the town square before proceeding to Jalan Bujang Suntong, Jalan Pulau, Jalan Channel, Jalan Mission, Jalan Kampung Nyabor, Jalan Central, Jalan Wong Nai Siong, Jalan Kampung Nyabor, Jalan Ramin and ended at Jalan Kampung Nyabor (in front of Maybank).
