BINTANGOR: Students should wisely choose the fields that fit their qualifications and interests to ensure their employability after graduation.

Meradong assemblyman Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing said any wrong choice of courses could affect performance and that some had even failed to complete their studies.

Most sadly, he said, they lost the competition for jobs against better students.

“Therefore, I advise the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) and Certificate of Higher Education Malaysia (STPM) students to ask in-depth questions from counsellors and advising staff from institutions on future courses and fields.

“Failure of students to choose the right courses could lead to difficulties and cause problems including unemployment,” he said when attending ‘Program Kembara Ke University’ for Upper-Six students of SMK Meradong yesterday.
He said young people should also be ready to adapt to changing trends.

In this regard, Ding advised parents to continue to carry out their responsibilities as best they can to help guide their children in their education.

“Through education, they can cross the poverty line and have the opportunity to enjoy a better life which is why I have always given priority to education in my financial allocation and expenditure.

“If we do not accept these changes, poverty and unemployment will not only increase, but the rate of social problems as well. There is no other way, unless we change,” he said.

Ding presented a donation of RM100 to each of the 164 SMK Meradong students who sat for STPM last year.
