SHANGHAI: China Energy Investment Group, a leading state owned company, is looking into investing in renewable energy projects in Sarawak.
The intention was conveyed in person by the chairman of the Group to the Sarawak delegation headed by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan held in Shanghai last Thursday.
“The company has expressed interest to participate in existing opportunities for floating solar in Sarawak with 2GW being the optimal capacity,” it said through a press statement by
Ministry of International Trade, Industry, and Investment (MINTRED), yesterday (Dec 6).
China Energy may also explore investments into areas such as Waste to Energy, Water treatment plants which they have expertise in.
“Given the availability of biomass resources and ability to produce green hydrogen, Sarawak is well-positioned for their investment into this area where 200,000 tonnes Green Methanol as the targeted capacity for the proposed plant.”
Besides conventional energy and existing renewables like wind and solar power, the company is also pioneering future energy sources such as Green Hydrogen and Methanol.
“Currently, the company is building China’s largest green hydrogen and ammonia plant in China and will be operational in 2026 anchored on strong Research and Development capabilities.
“To support Sarawak’s green energy strategies, the company is also proposing to set up a Centre for Renewable Energy that will allow local skills development and training to increase the talent pool for this thriving sector.”
Awang Tengah welcomed the investment from China Energy International Group as the series of investment proposals are in line with Sarawak’s goals of achieving economic prosperity, social inclusivity and environmental prosperity.
Among the Sarawak delegation were Ministry of International Trade, Industry, and Investment (MINTRED) advisor Datuk Seri Mohd Naroden Majais, MINTRED permanent secretary Dzulkornain Masron, INVEST Sarawak chief executive officer (CEO) Timothy Ong, and RECODA CEO Datuk Ismawi Ismuni.
