KUCHING: A man was charged in the Sessions Court here today (Feb 14) for allegedly sending offensive communications via his Facebook account against a woman, which later went viral.
The 31-year-old accused, who works as a contractor, pleaded not guilty to the charge under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 before Judge Iris Awen Jon.
If convicted, he faces a fine of up to RM50,000, imprisonment of up to one year, or both.
According to the charge, he was accused of uploading a Facebook status under the account name “Aizat Azizi,” containing insulting remarks directed at a 38-year-old woman.
The alleged offence took place at a house in Taman Sourabaya Indah at approximately 2.34 pm on December 19, 2024.
During the case mention, Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohamad Aiman Mutallib Mohamad Shariff proposed bail of RM5,000 with two local sureties.
However, defence counsel Mohd Ikmal Iqbal Baharudin requested the bail amount to be reduced to RM2,500 with one surety.
The court subsequently granted bail at RM5,000 with two sureties and set 17 March for case management.
