MARUDI: Deputy Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil addressed concerns on the Sarawak Basic Needs Assistance (SKAS) programme, particularly in rural areas.
Speaking on the issue, Dr Penguang acknowledged that many residents outside urban centres have expressed difficulties with the digital voucher system used for the programme.
He emphasised the need for the Marudi Service Centre to develop mechanisms or initiatives to assist those unable to navigate digital platforms effectively.
“This issue doesn’t just apply to SKAS; it also affects other assistance programmes requiring digital registration. On our side, we must consider this challenge and allow some leeway for residents to use traditional forms of registration,” he said on Sunday (Jan 5).
He added that the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government remains committed to inclusivity.
“We are open to providing alternative registration methods, not just through digital channels. Options such as engaging local community leaders, district officers, or party service centres should also be made available.”
Dr Penguang stressed the importance of recognising that not all individuals are digitally proficient.
“We have to be mindful of this and ensure that everyone, regardless of their digital skills, has access to these essential assistance programmes,” he said.
