KUCHING: The Ministry of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development (M-FICORD) is proposing a one-stop centre be established in Sarawak to coordinate matters related to agriculture between the ministry and the federal government.
Its minister Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom said the centre would enable his ministry to use sufficient manpower to prevent and control anything related to the agro sector.
“When we talk about the agricultural sector as a whole, livestock, fisheries and crops are three different things.
“We don’t want to duplicate roles of trying to see in silo. That’s why we need to have discussions with the government to assist us,” he said.
Dr Rundi said this during a press conference after he received a courtesy visit from Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS) Deputy Minister Chan Foong Hin at the DUN building here on today (Feb 21).
On another matter, he pointed out that the agricultural institute produced several graduates every year who are trainable in new modern farming.
However, he said, the younger generation did not want to be exposed to the sun (uninterested in farming).
“Therefore, we need to give some incentives to them so that this can entice them to venture into the agricultural sector,” he added.
