Celcom and Sacofa are in discussions to upgrade the Internet connection speed from Kuala Igan to Sibu by 1Gbps.

This was revealed by Corporate Affairs Assistant Minister Abdullah Saidol in response to Safiee Ahmad (GPS-Daro).

Abdullah said there were nine 4G telecommunication towers and two 3G telecommunication towers in Daro District.

The Internet traffic in Daro is connected through Kuala Igan, followed by Sibu and Kuching.

“Since the speed connection from Kuala Igan to Sibu is only 400Mbps, thus there will be ‘bottleneck’ (internet traffic jam) in the presence of high traffic from Kuala Igan to Sibu one at a time,” he elaborated.

“Celcom has also taken the initiative to upgrade Radio Access Network (RAN) as well as existing optical fibre,” he stated.

On Telekom Malaysia’s (TM) effort to increase fixed line and Internet service such as UniFi from 10Mbps to 100Mbps, especially in Daro and its surrounding areas, Abdullah mentioned that TM was working to increase Streamyx broadband connection service.

“Apart from that, UniFi mobile services with the speed up to 300Mbps have been implemented in stages to all locations in Sarawak, including Pekan Daro,” he noted.

When asked whether the state government was going to establish a community Internet centre, Abdullah said that it was equally a concern for the elected leaders.

“Other than telco companies from the private sector, Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Bumiputera Sarawak (Tegas) and Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) are actually planning to have all this after the construction of all the digital hubs in the big cities.

“The possibility of the followed-through plan is that they will look into having community Internet centres in the stressed areas according to their needs and the community’s interests in the idea,” he elaborated.

On having its own telco, Abdullah stated that the state government had not yet planned to establish this but this did not stop any private investors to have their own licence in establishing their own telco.
