KUCHING: Members of the public were urged to be careful when asked to sign documents by other people.
“Take all the necessary steps to obtain independent advice before signing any paperwork,” said Micheal Kong, Special Assistant to DAP Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen in a press release here today.
“This week, Sim Kiat Leng and I were approached by Mdm Yeong from Miri. In 2019, she befriended a male companion from Singapore and was sweet-talked into being his sponsor in order to apply for a long-term social visit pass.
“Mdm Yeong was made to sign some papers to facilitate the application (despite not knowing what the contents of the documents were) and a three-year pass was approved by the Immigration Department.
“Along the way, their relationship soured where she suffered some domestic violence over the years. Recently, the Singaporean male moved to Peninsula Malaysia with another female companion while dumping Mdm Yeong alone in Miri,” Kong said.
He added that Yeong sought DAP’s assistance to remove herself as a guarantor of this Singaporean male.
“We have assisted to write a letter explaining the situation to the Director of the Immigration Department and the officers have given their assurance that they will look into the matter for us,” he said.
