KUCHING: The Catholic legal community in Sarawak gathered at Blessed Sacrament Church for the Red Mass yesterday (Jan 25).
This Red Mass is an annual tradition that seeks divine guidance and blessings for members of the legal profession.
Archbishop Datuk Dr Simon Poh led the Mass, accompanied by Father Eugene G Magsalang and Father Leonard Yap, in the presence of a distinguished congregation.
In his homily, Poh reminded the legal community of the challenges faced by Christians worldwide and urged them to remain steadfast in their commitment to justice, integrity, and the common good.
He emphasised the importance of upholding moral and ethical values in their professional roles, encouraging those in the legal fraternity to be vigilant in defending justice when the need arises.
As a token of appreciation, State Legal Counsel Datuk Seri J C Fong, representing the congregation, presented mementos to the altar servers, the choir, the priests, and the Archbishop, recognising their dedication and service in making the Red Mass a meaningful and spiritually enriching occasion.
The Red Mass, steeped in tradition, continues to serve as a solemn occasion for the legal community to seek divine wisdom and strength in fulfilling their professional duties with fairness and compassion.
Among the dignitaries in attendance were retired Court of Appeal Judge Datuk Stephen Chung and former Registrar of the High Court of Sabah & Sarawak, now serving in the Native Court of Sarawak, Gabriel Gumis.
The service was also well attended by lawyers, judges, law students, and other individuals involved in the administration of justice, reflecting the strong faith and unity within the legal community.
