KUCHING: Three local men were arrested for attempted murder when they tried to ram into police officers following a high-speed chase early yesterday morning (Mar 29).

Acting Kuching police chief Supt Merbin Lisa said the incident occurred at around 3.20 am when a crime prevention patrol team spotted a red Mitsubishi Triton and a red Perodua Bezza behaving suspiciously along Jalan Green.

When the team approached, both vehicles sped off and prompted a chase.

“The team focused on the Triton, pursuing it into a residential area with flashing beacons. There, the driver made a sudden U-turn and accelerated toward three officers standing on the road, attempting to ram them.

“One of the officers fired a shot at the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road,” he said in a statement.

Police then arrested the suspects, aged 39, 41, and 43, and seized the vehicle along with suspected crime-related tools.

Merbin said one of the suspects (41 years old) sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in stable condition.

Background checks revealed that two of the suspects had prior drug-related criminal records, and all of them tested positive for drugs.

He stated that all three are remanded until Apr 3 to facilitate investigations under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder and Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958 for carrying a weapon in public.

“Police are actively tracking down the red Perodua Bezza, which remains at large.

“We urged those with information to contact the Kuching police operations centre at 082-244444 or senior investigating officer ASP Chris Olsen Ramlee at 013-8607572,” he said.

The public is also advised against speculation or spreading unverified information regarding the incident.
