SIBU: Sibu Life Care Society (SLCS) has launched the Cancer Care Fund, a far-reaching public welfare programme, held at Sianggelila Xiqing restaurant here on Friday evening.
The event was officially launched by Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker, Alice Lau Kiong Yieng, which saw the veneration of the elderly and presentation of the education awards to outstanding students.
In her speech, Lau, who is also Lanang Member of Parliament, asserted that the Cancer Care Fund not only reflects the great responsibility and contribution of SLCS in social welfare for a long time, but also brings a warm encouragement to cancer patients, allowing them to face challenges more strongly.
She explained that this love is not only assistance to demonstrate the selfless care and love of the society for cancer patients but also a silent force that supports those who are struggling with illness to move forward.
Every aid and contribution given, she noted, is not only a financial help, but also a deep encouragement, which ignites the light of hope for the beneficiaries and injects a steady stream of positive energy into Sibu, a warm community.
Calling upon more companies and social groups to actively participate in such good deeds, she pointed out that through resource sharing and love cohesion, more support and strength can be provided to people in need.
“We all know that cancer is a long and difficult battle. It not only brings physical pain to patients, but also brings heavy financial and mental burdens to their families. However, I firmly believe that as long as we work together, we can bring more support and comfort to these patients and their families who bravely face the disease.
“As a people’s representative, I deeply understand the importance of health to individuals and families. Therefore, my service centre pays special attention to disease-related assistance projects when providing various types of assistance.
“For example, every year I provide assistance to cancer patients in the Lanang parliamentary constituency to help them relieve their financial pressure; in addition, my service centre also has dialysis assistance. We all know that kidney patients need dialysis three times a week, which causes these patients to be unable to work normally and their income has dropped sharply, or even completely lost their income. I provide this one-time assistance in the hope of helping to reduce some of the burden on the patients’ families,” she stated.
Stating that the disease assistance funds of her service centre are not divided by the age of patients, and are open for application all year round, Lau assured that she will do her best to provide help to those in need in the constituency.
These efforts hope to make people in need feel: “They are not alone, we are always by their side”, she said, adding that all should work together to pass on warmth to those in need and work together to build a caring society.
On the veneration of the elderly and presentation of the education awards to outstanding students, Lau said it is of great significance as it is not only an encouragement for the academic efforts and achievements of members’ children but also a high promotion of the virtue of filial piety and respect for the elderly in Chinese culture.
Among those present were SLCS chairman, Chew Ching Kuong and organising chairman, Kapitan Song Ik Siu.
